The Power of a Good Subject Line: Monitor Your Own Inbox for Inspiration

Posted by Marianne Celluccion December 13, 2012April 16, 2014in Email Delivery & Deliverability, Email Engagement, Email Marketing Best Practices, Marketing Strategy

The goal of subject lines is to encourage readers to open your email and take action. For this reason the subject line is one of the most important components of successful promotional emails and newsletters.

Consistently coming up with subject lines that are engaging can be tough. But you don’t need a creative mind to build the perfect subject line. You can get inspiration by monitoring your own inbox and assessing newsletters and promotions that others send to you. More than likely you’re marketed to nearly every day. Take notice of the emails you’re personally opening and why. You can save a lot of time by learning from others. No need to reinvent the wheel! Many of the companies sending you marketing emails have already tested their own subject lines and you can learn from their research.

Data Collection Tips to Improve Deliverability

As email deliverability has become heavily weighted on user engagement, it’s not enough to ‘spray and pray.’ The importance of creating highly relevant and valuable email content has become the key to keeping subscribers opening, reading and clicking through your emails.

Since engagement metrics have become the leading determinant of whether an email message reaches your target’s inbox or spam folder, consider the following 3 tips when putting together your email marketing plan for 2013:

Plant a Tree, Watch it Grow

Posted by Net Atlantic Marketingon June 5, 2012April 8, 2015in Email Engagement, Email Templates, Design & Layout, Marketing Strategy
Plant A Tree, Watch It Grow

How long have you been using your current email marketing template? Really, think about it. Try to ballpark it within a few months. And how often do you send email? Okay, let’s say your template is a ripe two years old and you send once a week. That’s over a hundred messages your subscribers have received that look exactly the same. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your email template looks just fine…but think of your poor subscribers! Every week, it’s the same old thing. It might start to get mundane after a while.

Think of your morning commute. Boring, right? But what if, one day, somebody planted a beautiful tree on the side of the road? Wouldn’t that be great? It’s always been the same mind-numbing commute, but now you have that tree to look forward to every day! Sure, the tree will get boring eventually, but what if someone planted some flowers by it? Then maybe they’ll build a nice fence around their little garden…and who knows? They might even paint the fence a different color someday. Suddenly, your morning commute isn’t so boring any more.

The archer with better aim beats the archer with more arrows.

Don’t Mistarget Your Marketing Efforts

I am a consumer. During the summer, I work with the marketing team at Net Atlantic, an email marketing provider. But nine months of the year I’m just an average student. I’m the person that reads those emails you send out and, if they’re interesting enough, I click through to your site. If you’re lucky, I just might buy something.

So today you get a little “outside perspective.” I may not analyze CTRs or market segmentation patterns, but I spend a few minutes every day looking through the dozens of emails I get from all sorts of companies and I know what makes them appealing.

Tips to Send Email Campaigns Like One of the Big Guys

Tips to Send Email Campaigns Like One of the Big Guys

Just because you are a small business doesn’t mean you lack the resources to integrate email campaign tactics that are deployed by large organizations into your marketing strategy. Email service providers are now making it easier for companies to automate their emails and implement nurturing campaigns, despite having a one person marketing team. All it takes is a little time and patience to outline a strategy, set your campaigns and analyze your results.

It is understandable that small businesses are overwhelmed with the amount of features that are now available to email marketers. It is easy to feel like you don’t have the time to log into your system and build out a lifecycle campaign that will engage your audience for the next 6 months to a year. Heck, you can hardly find time to pay your vendors and follow up with your customers. But think of the extra staff you can hire after your email campaigns get a 600% lift in performance.

It is time to stop making excuses and dedicate time to your email marketing campaigns. Implement these steps into your email marketing and it will start to reach its potential ROI.

Why Your Email Marketing Strategy Stopped Working – And How To Fix It

Posted by Net Atlantic Marketingon February 8, 2012April 16, 2014in Email Engagement, Email Marketing Best Practices, Marketing Strategy

Recently I came across a question on LinkedIn: “Why Does Email Marketing Sometimes Fail?” To be fair, the question is an honest request for feedback, not an assertion. Email is a proven communications method when used well, however there are those moments when senders see a pronounced reduction in email’s effectiveness, and must decide whether to re-evaluate their strategy.

It’s a dirty little secret in marketing: Every tactic eventually falls short. We see it when a great television campaign just stops being interesting, and when a Facebook page rises to 100,000 Likes and then suddenly stops growing. Dancing Santa banners must have been hilarious at one time, but are now the online equivalent of carnival barkers.

Email is more of a journeyman tactic. It’s always there. It’s reliable. It’s expected, and it drives immediate visits. But it rarely makes a big splash or gets talked about (unless the sender made a mistake). It’s hard to ‘re-launch’ a brand using email. It just reflects what the brand is doing in other avenues.

Lift Performance by 600%: Lifecycle Campaigns Simplified

Posted by Net Atlantic Marketingon December 26, 2011April 16, 2014in Email Automation, Email Engagement, Marketing Strategy

Improve your relationship with your audience by showing them you are aware of the connections you have already established with them. Send very timely, targeted and relevant emails to your recipients whether they’ve just made a purchase or they’ve been a long-time customer.

Sound overwhelming? These types of campaigns are referred to as Lifecycle Marketing and are built around the simple concept of trigger-based events. Events that trigger an email marketing campaign can be anything from a new signup to a purchase on your website.

Lifecycle emails are an ideal way to show subscribers that you’re aware of the connections you’ve established with them. Best of all they work; in fact, they work really well. Gartner reports that marketers can expect a 600% lift in performance over outbound campaigns by leveraging event-triggered marketing tactics.

I’ve sent multiple emails and they’re not making it into my (or my recipients’) inbox!

Posted by Marianne Celluccion September 21, 2011April 8, 2015in Email Delivery & Deliverability, Email Engagement, Email Marketing Best Practices
Why Don't My Emails Reach The Inbox?

I have sent multiple emails to different email providers (Yahoo!, Hotmail (Live), Gmail, AOL, etc.) with no success. They’re not making it into my inbox, or my recipients’ inboxes.

Email delivery can fail at any number of places along its journey from the sender to the intended recipients…even if the recipient is you! As the possible issues are limitless, in this post, I’ve covered some of the most common reasons that emails may not be delivered to an inbox.

Messages can evade inboxes and end up in junk email, bulk email, spam, or trash folders due to automatic spam filtering or filters that you’ve configured, your administrator has configured, or an email client has chosen by default. Also, those who engage (open, click, forward, read, re-read, or have your ‘From’ address in their address book or contacts list) will see the message in their inbox, where other members of your list, at the same domain (IP address or web address), who do not actively engage or have your ‘From’ address in their address book or contact list, see it in a secondary folder.

Get More From Your Email

Posted by Marianne Celluccion June 8, 2011April 16, 2014in Email Engagement, Email Marketing Best Practices, Mobile Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing

Email marketing is complementary to social media and in today’s multichannel environment, you can extend the reach of your online and email marketing efforts by incorporating social media into your overall marketing plan.

Enhance your online presence by reaching new prospects in ways that are very different from traditional advertising channels. Social networking is changing the way we communicate not only with friends and family, but with customers and prospective customers.

Since consumers expect brands to interact with them across all online channels, marketers can embrace and integrate social media and leverage the power of viral and word-of-mouth marketing. Make your web, video and email content shareable via email, blogs, micro-blogs, and social news, bookmarking and professional networks like Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, YouTube, LinkedIn and other popular social networks.

When Should You Send Email Campaigns?

Posted by Marianne Celluccion May 3, 2011April 16, 2014in Email Engagement, Email Marketing Best Practices, Marketing Strategy, Transactional Email

Do you ever wonder what are the best days and times to send email?

If you do, you’re not alone.

I can’t tell you when and how often to send messages to your customers or subscribers — there is no “best” time or day to send email. However, I can tell you that if you capture the right data, you won’t need one.
