Don’t Call It A Comeback

Last month, Entrepreneur Magazine published an article in which the author listed email marketing as one of five “refurbished classic” marketing techniques.

It’s a great article, and while we certainly agree with the “classic” part of that description, we’d argue that email marketing never really went away. Email is not a tired old solution that’s been refurbished for modern marketers; rather, it’s a powerful marketing tool that has evolved quite steadily since its inception in the early 1990s.

In the words of LL Cool J: Don’t call it a comeback.

Net Atlantic was there in the early days of email marketing, and we’re still here. We’ve seen the industry go from simple batch-and-blast mailings to the highly personalized, content-driven marketing machine that it is today. We’ve also seen a lot of “next big things” come and go over the years. It seems like every few months there’s another hot, new marketing trend that’s going to “change everything”. But in the midst of all the noise and hullabaloo, email has continued to quietly and effectively do its thing: get measurable, reliable results for those who know how to use it well.

To put it another way: Email marketing is like a Tom Hanks movie. It might not be flashy, and it might not have lots of bells and whistles and gimmicks – but you know you can count on a great performance and that you’ll get your money’s worth. As far as we’re concerned, that trumps being the next big thing any day.
